As you’re getting ready to move, hopefully you’re going through your house or apartment and deciding what you don’t need to take with you. You might find some old clothes that are still in good shape that you can donate to a local nonprofit or charity such as Habitat for Humanity, ARC, or Goodwill. You’ll most likely also come across things that you believe you can sell before you move, and there’s nothing wrong with making a little cash prior to a relocation. At Billy Goat in Fort Collins, we want to make your moving day as easy as possible, and in this blog, we’ll look at a few ways you can sell some stuff before you pack up and leave.
Selling Things Before You Move

GARAGE/YARD SALE
This is perhaps the most obvious, but having a garage or yard sale before you move can be a great way to get rid of some unwanted stuff and put some money in your pocket. If you have a set of golf clubs or a vast collection of movies that you don’t want to sell, put everything out on a table in the driveway, post some signs, and watch the people show up. People love checking out garage and yard sales, especially when the weather is nice. All those random items that have been taking up space in your house can now go take up space in someone else’s house!
CRAIGSLIST
Thousands upon thousands of items are posted for sale on Craigslist every day, and it can be a great way to get rid of that old futon that’s been in your basement for ten years. You can post your items on your local board, and Northern Colorado and Fort Collins have plenty of people looking for furniture, appliances, and other items at a discounted price. However, be sure that you feel safe about connecting with a potential buyer online, and always remember that local authorities have set up “safe zones” (such as police stations) where you can meet someone to complete the transaction without having them come to your house.
FRIENDS AND FAMILY
If you’re not keen on having a garage sale or posting things online, you can always ask your friends or family members if they’re interested in any of your stuff. Be sure it’s clear that you’re not giving these items away, but that you will offer them at a reasonable price. You have a TV that’s in great shape, and your brother or cousin who’s just moved into his first apartment has been looking for a flat screen. You can sell your TV for a good price, and your relative will be able to use it for years to come!
FIRE SALE/AUCTION
As moving day gets closer, you may still have some items that you want to get rid of that are still hanging around. Inviting people over for a fire sale or auction can be a perfect way to unload some stuff and make some money. People can offer you a certain amount, or your friends can bid on certain items until there is a winner. You can make a night of it with food and drink, and by the end, you’ll have less stuff to move!
