Moving Preparation Checklist from the G.O.A.T.S.

Moving can be one of the most stressful endeavors that is undertaken. So we here at Billy Goat Moving wanted to create a simple checklist of things that you may easily forget to do with the chaos of moving happening all around you.

SORT YOUR POSSESSIONS THAT YOU WANT TO KEEP OR GET RID OF

Moving is a great excuse to get rid of some of that clutter in your home. Five-year-old receipts, some knick-knacks you forgot you owned, or maybe some clothes you haven’t worn in a few years. This is a great opportunity to start fresh and get rid of, or donate, some of these forgotten items that only serve to take up space. Maybe someone else can find a better use of that clown cookie jar grandma gave you a few years back.

CREATE A MOVING INVENTORY

Once you have settled on what you’re taking with you make sure you create a moving inventory on Google Sheets or Excel. It’ll help keep things organized and help guys like us keep track of everything when moving day finally approaches.

SET A STOP DATE FOR UTILITIES AND PAID SERVICES

Like we said earlier, with all the chaos of moving it is easy to forget things, like turning off your water for example. Once you have your move date locked in don’t forget to contact your utility companies about it and set a shut-off, or switch date. The last thing you want is to pay for someone else’s utility usage and arrive at your new place with no running water, electricity, and internet.

GET A CHANGE OF ADDRESS

Make sure to contact USPS about your change of address so any new mail can be sent to the correct address, also notify your banks of this change too if you plan to keep them. That way when statements or new cards come in, they won’t be sent to the wrong place.

CLEAN OUT YOUR SAFETY DEPOSIT BOX

If you decided to change banks however, then you’ll want to go in and clean out your safety deposit box. Another thing you don’t want is to move and realize you forgot to clean this guy out.

SEND RECORDS OVER

If you have children, make sure to notify the school about the move and request for their records to be sent to their new school. Same with medical, dental, and vet records too.

PLEASE DEFROST THE FRIDGE

Seriously, DO NOT forget this part. If you’re planning on taking your fridge with you then plan to empty and defrost it for at least 24 hours before move day. Nothing says bad move day like a heavy fridge leaking water everywhere, speaking of which…

EAT ALL PERISHABLE FOODS

Plan your meals out accordingly before the move and eat, or get rid of, all kinds of perishable foods in your pantry. In addition to a leaking fridge, the last thing you want is the smell of rotting food.

PACK A 24-HOUR BOX FOR YOURSELF

When the dust has settled and all the boxes are in your new home don’t feel like the battle is over. Because now everyone is hungry and you can’t find the plates you packed! Be sure to pack one or two 24 hour boxes with essentials like toilet paper, paper towels, paper plates, cups, maybe a movie or two, and some chargers as well. Trust us on this one, you’ll thank us later.

SAY HELLO TO YOUR NEW HOME!

Take in your new space and say hello to your new home. Maybe say hello to your new neighbors as well. See if they have any power tools you can borrow and never return.
