In our last blog, we wrote about selling some of your personal belongings before you move, and how it can help you feel less stressed. In this post, we’ll look at items you can donate before moving day, either because you don’t need them any more or you want to give back to the community you’ve lived in for several years. At Billy Goat Moving in Fort Collins, we want to make your move as easy as possible, and hopefully some of the tips below will help!
Donating Items Before Your Move
Billy Goat Moving
1. CLOTHING
We all have those t-shirts that we simply don’t want to give up, either because they have sentimental value or because we know that the band we used to love will one day be big again. However, it can be a good idea to donate some of your clothing before your move, simply because clothes can take up the most space when you’re heading to a new house. Non-profits such as Goodwill or Habitat for Humanity will accept your gently worn items, and if they decide they can’t be resold, they’ll repurpose them for you, such as sending them to shelters to be made into beds for cats and dogs. There are locations for both charities across Northern Colorado, and dropping off a few boxes of clothes can help you feel better about your move.
2. BOOKS
You may have built quite a library over the years, but you know there are books on your shelves that you’re never going to read again. Rather than tote them to your new place, why not donate them to a local library or charity? Most libraries will accept pre-owned books, or if you have lots of children’s books, seek out a preschool or kindergarten that could benefit from them. This way, you’ll know that someone is reading them and you don’t have to pack them!
3. FOOD
Your pantry may be stocked with non-perishable items, and maybe you’ve kept hitting the grocery store, even as moving day grew closer. If you’re relocating to a new place that’s quite a distance away, you may not want to take all that food with you. Local charities and food banks are always happy to take your unwanted food items, just as long as they are canned, boxed, or packaged. You’ll have to find a new grocery store in your new city, so why bring all that food with you?
Donating items before your move can make life easier, while also helping those in need. Be sure to ask about tax-deductible receipts that can help you come filing season. Also, be sure to go through your belongings before you donate, as you don’t want anything that’s ripped or broken to be included, since those items will most likely be tossed.
